If you are in a snowy area you can use a tree to make an even simpler shelter. Snow will often not fall directly around a tree trunk but create a small hollow which you can extend and shore up with fallen branches.

Snow shelters: if you find yourself marooned in snowy situations you may be able to build a snow shelter. If the snow can be compacted you can use it for the roof as well as for the base. If the snow is softer you will need to use branches or other materials to build a roof although you can then pile snow on top for insulation.
